Learning Objectives:

Flipped Learning
  1. Recap the the purpose of the CPU and the Von Neumann architecture:
  2. Experience the function of the CPU as fetch and execute instructions stored in memory
  3. Explain how common characteristics of CPUs affect their performance, clock speed, cache size, number of cores 
  1. Experience what the processor and its various parts do.
  2. Describe how, with examples features the CPU affect performance and relate these back to the Game.

Starter:
Log on and play this Hoop Shoot game for 5 mins

Main: 
​The main part of the lesson is set around playing a CPU simulation game where in teams you will emulate a CPU performing its tasks.  This is great fun when played outside and some distance is added between each part of hardware.

Once completed ask students to discuss the various roles and how they relate to the simulation.  Slide 3 on the PPT has some discussion questions.

  • Complete the discussion question on the last slide
  • Pictionary - students draw an image of one element of what they have learnt about the CPU so far, other students guess what it is.​
